Why Visit
Discover Barberyn Island
Located just off the coast of Beruwala in southern Sri Lanka, Barberyn Island is a picturesque rocky island best known for its historic lighthouse, one of the oldest operational lighthouses in the country. Surrounded by turquoise waters and colourful coral reefs, the island offers a peaceful escape and stunning views of Sri Lanka's southwestern coastline.
Constructed in 1889 during the British colonial period, the Barberyn Lighthouse stands approximately 34 metres tall and continues to guide vessels navigating the busy shipping routes of the Indian Ocean. Its striking white tower has become an iconic landmark visible from miles away and remains one of the most photographed lighthouses in Sri Lanka.
Visitors reach the island by a short boat ride from Beruwala Harbour. The surrounding waters are exceptionally clear, making the area popular for snorkelling, scuba diving and marine photography. Coral gardens support a variety of tropical fish, sea turtles and other marine life, providing memorable underwater experiences for nature enthusiasts.
The island itself is uninhabited, creating a peaceful atmosphere ideal for photography, sightseeing and enjoying uninterrupted ocean views. From the lighthouse grounds, visitors can admire sweeping panoramas of Beruwala, Bentota and the sparkling Indian Ocean.
Whether you're exploring Sri Lanka's maritime history, snorkelling among vibrant coral reefs or enjoying a scenic boat excursion, Barberyn Island offers one of the country's most charming coastal experiences.
