Pigeon Island National Park

Located just off the coast of Nilaveli near Trincomalee, Pigeon Island National Park is one of Sri Lanka's most spectacular marine protected areas and among the country's most popular coastal attractions. Surrounded by crystal-clear turquoise waters, the island is internationally recognised for its thriving coral reefs, colourful tropical fish and exceptional snorkelling opportunities.

Declared a national park in 2003, Pigeon Island protects one of Sri Lanka's best remaining coral reef ecosystems. Visitors can explore shallow reefs filled with hundreds of species of reef fish, sea turtles, giant clams, moray eels and harmless blacktip reef sharks. The calm, warm waters make the park suitable for both beginners and experienced snorkellers.

The island itself is covered with coastal vegetation and derives its name from the Blue Rock Pigeon, an endemic bird species frequently seen nesting on the rocky cliffs. White sandy beaches and breathtaking ocean views provide the perfect setting for relaxation between snorkelling sessions.
