Sigiriya Rock Fortress

Rising nearly 200 metres above the surrounding plains, Sigiriya Rock Fortress is one of Sri Lanka's most extraordinary cultural landmarks and one of the world's finest examples of ancient urban planning. Built during the reign of King Kashyapa in the 5th century, this magnificent royal citadel transformed an enormous granite rock into a sophisticated palace, fortress and pleasure garden unlike anything else in South Asia.

The journey to the summit is filled with remarkable discoveries. Visitors pass through beautifully landscaped water gardens, symmetrical terraces and enormous boulder gardens before reaching the world-famous Sigiriya Frescoes, delicate paintings that have survived for more than fifteen centuries. Nearby, the polished Mirror Wall still preserves ancient inscriptions left by visitors hundreds of years ago, offering a fascinating glimpse into Sri Lanka's literary history.

Halfway up the rock stand the impressive Lion's Paws, the remains of a monumental entrance that once formed the body of a giant stone lion. Beyond this iconic gateway, a staircase leads to the summit where the ruins of King Kashyapa's palace overlook sweeping views of forests, lakes and distant mountains stretching across the Cultural Triangle.

Today, Sigiriya is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and remains one of Asia's greatest archaeological treasures.
