Yapahuwa Rock Fortress

Rising dramatically above the surrounding plains, Yapahuwa Rock Fortress served as the royal capital of Sri Lanka during the 13th century. Although its time as the kingdom's political centre was relatively brief, the fortress remains one of the country's most remarkable archaeological sites, combining natural defences with impressive royal architecture.

The most striking feature of Yapahuwa is its magnificent stone staircase, widely regarded as one of the finest examples of medieval stone craftsmanship in Sri Lanka. Richly decorated with beautifully carved lions, mythical creatures and intricate ornamental details, the staircase once led to the Sacred Tooth Relic and the royal palace that stood atop the fortress.

Visitors climbing the rock are rewarded with sweeping panoramic views across forests, lakes and distant villages, while the summit reveals the remains of palace foundations, defensive walls and ancient reservoirs. The peaceful surroundings offer a very different atmosphere from Sri Lanka's more visited heritage sites, allowing travellers to appreciate the history at a relaxed pace.
