Jetavanaramaya

Dominating the skyline of the Sacred City of Anuradhapura, Jetavanaramaya stands as one of the greatest engineering achievements of the ancient world. Constructed during the reign of King Mahasena in the 3rd century AD, this colossal monument was once the tallest brick structure on Earth and remains one of the largest stupas ever built. Its immense scale reflects the remarkable architectural knowledge and craftsmanship of ancient Sri Lanka.

Jetavanaramaya served as the spiritual centre of the influential Jetavana Monastery, one of the island's largest and most prestigious Buddhist monastic institutions. Thousands of monks once lived, studied and practised meditation within the vast monastery complex, making it a thriving centre of Buddhist learning that attracted pilgrims and scholars from across Asia.

The stupa is believed to enshrine a sacred relic of Lord Buddha and continues to be an active place of worship for Buddhist devotees. Built using millions of carefully fired bricks, the monument originally rose to approximately 122 metres, demonstrating an extraordinary level of engineering long before modern construction techniques existed. Even today, its massive brick dome continues to inspire awe among visitors.
