Situated on the banks of the Kelani River just outside Colombo, Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara is one of Sri Lanka's most sacred Buddhist temples. According to Buddhist tradition, Lord Buddha visited this site during his third and final visit to Sri Lanka, making it one of the island's most revered pilgrimage destinations for over two thousand years.
The temple has been rebuilt and restored many times throughout history, preserving its importance as a centre of Buddhist worship and national heritage. Today, visitors are welcomed by elegant architecture, beautifully maintained shrines and one of Sri Lanka's finest collections of Buddhist murals painted by the renowned artist Solias Mendis. Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara is also famous for its annual Duruthu Perahera, a spectacular cultural festival held each January to commemorate Buddha's visit.
