Bundala National Park

Bundala National Park is one of Sri Lanka's most important wetland ecosystems and a paradise for birdwatchers. Recognised as Sri Lanka's first Ramsar Wetland of International Importance, the park protects an extraordinary network of lagoons, salt marshes, sand dunes and scrub forests that support an exceptional diversity of wildlife.

The park is internationally famous for its migratory birds. Every year, thousands of birds travel from distant regions of Europe, Central Asia and Siberia to spend the northern winter in Bundala's peaceful wetlands. Greater flamingos often become the highlight of the season, transforming the lagoons into spectacular shades of pink alongside pelicans, painted storks, spoonbills and countless other waterbirds.

Although birds are its greatest attraction, Bundala is also home to Asian elephants, mugger crocodiles, water buffalo, spotted deer, jackals, monkeys and several species of turtles that nest along the nearby coastline. The combination of wetlands, forests and coastal habitats creates one of the richest ecosystems in southern Sri Lanka.
